5 Senior-level questions with answers

1

How do you show that design work had an effect?

Answer

By naming the measure before the work — task completion, error rate, time on task, support contacts, conversion — and reporting the change with a baseline. Without that, the argument for design is aesthetic and loses to anything with a number. The uncomfortable part is committing to a metric that might not move.

2

How do you handle a stakeholder who redesigns your work?

Answer

Find the concern underneath, because it is rarely the shade of blue — it is usually that something important looks unimportant, or a fear about what leadership will say. Then propose a solution to that concern rather than defending the artefact. Being right and unpersuasive gets the design overruled anyway.

3

How do you introduce a design system to a product that has none?

Answer

Start from an audit of what already exists — the count of button variants is usually the argument that makes the case for you. Then build only what the next few screens need, with real adoption in one team before rolling it wider. A system built up front and adopted by nobody is the common failure, because the cost is visible and the payoff is not yet.

4

How do you balance consistency with a screen that genuinely needs to be different?

Answer

Consistency is a default, not a rule — the point of it is that people do not have to relearn, so breaking it is justified when the alternative costs more understanding than it saves. What matters is that the deviation is deliberate and documented, since the damage comes from inconsistency nobody decided on.

5

How do you work when there is no time or budget for research?

Answer

Use what exists: support tickets, session recordings, analytics on where people drop, and the sales team's most-asked questions. Then test with five people, which costs an afternoon. The honest framing is that you are not choosing between research and no research — you are choosing between cheap evidence and assumption.
