6 Junior-level questions with answers

1

What is boolean search, and how do you use it to source candidates?

Answer

Boolean search combines keywords with AND, OR, and NOT to narrow a search on LinkedIn or a job board — for example ('React' OR 'Vue') AND 'frontend' NOT 'intern' to find mid-level frontend candidates while excluding interns. It's most useful for niche or technical roles where a plain keyword search returns too many irrelevant profiles. Getting good at it is mostly about iterating — running a search, checking who it returns, and narrowing or widening from there.

2

What's the goal of a first screening call, and what do you make sure to cover?

Answer

The goal is a fast yes/no on whether to move the candidate forward, not a full evaluation — confirm logistics like location, salary range, and availability first, since those can end the conversation immediately. Then ask about motivation for leaving their current role and walk through one or two of the role's core requirements. Twenty minutes is usually enough if you go in with a short list instead of improvising.

3

What do you actually use an applicant tracking system for, day to day?

Answer

It's where every candidate's stage, resume, and interview notes live so nothing depends on one recruiter's memory or inbox. I use it to move candidates through stages, log feedback right after each interview while it's fresh, and pull simple reports like how many candidates are in each stage for a role. Consistent use matters more than any specific feature — half-updated records are worse than a spreadsheet.

4

How do you turn a hiring manager's rough notes into a job description candidates will actually respond to?

Answer

I ask the hiring manager what the person will actually do in the first six months, not just a list of skills, because that's what makes a posting specific instead of generic. Then I separate true requirements from nice-to-haves, since an over-long must-have list quietly filters out qualified candidates. I'll usually draft it, send it back for a quick sanity check, and avoid sitting on it for a week going back and forth.

5

How do you juggle scheduling interviews across multiple interviewers and time zones without losing candidates to a slow process?

Answer

I block recurring interview slots with hiring managers in advance so I'm not chasing five calendars every time, and I confirm availability with the candidate before looping in the panel. When a scheduling gap runs past a couple of days, I'd rather over-communicate with the candidate about the delay than let them go silent and assume they've been forgotten. Scheduling tools help, but the real fix is agreeing on a process before the req opens, not improvising per candidate.

6

How do you source candidates for a role with a small or niche talent pool?

Answer

I widen the search past the obvious title — the right skills often sit under a different job title than the one on the req, so I search by skill and past companies rather than just keyword-matching the title. I also lean on referrals and niche communities (forums, local meetups, alumni groups) instead of relying only on job boards. It takes longer, and I'd rather tell a hiring manager the pool is small upfront than quietly under-deliver on a two-week timeline.
