AI Mock Interview FAQ for US Job Seekers

Does an AI mock interview cover FAANG-style loops, system design, and behavioral rounds? Honest answers on what it does and doesn't replace in a US tech hiring process.

The US tech interview loop has a fairly specific shape — recruiter screen, technical rounds, often a system-design round, a behavioral round, all scored independently by a hiring committee. Here's exactly where a tool like this fits into that, and where it doesn't.

Does it cover FAANG-style loops?

Partially, and I'd rather be specific than let "AI mock interview" imply more than it delivers. Prepair practices role-and-level technical questions — the kind where you explain how something works or reason through a problem out loud. It is not a LeetCode-style algorithm judge, and it doesn't run a dedicated system-design deep dive with a whiteboard and follow-up pressure the way a senior-level system-design round actually works. If that specific round is your bottleneck, this isn't the tool for it — practice that with LeetCode and a real mock system-design session instead.

Where it does help: the technical-depth rounds where you're explaining reasoning, not just producing code — which is most of what a mid-level loop and a good chunk of a senior loop actually test, beyond the algorithm-heavy rounds specifically.

Does it cover behavioral questions?

Not as a dedicated practiced category across every role right now — the core practice is technical, scoped to role and level. If you're prepping "tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager"-style questions, I've written about why those specific answers are harder to fake than people think, but that's separate reading material, not something scored inside the product yet.

Does it replace grinding LeetCode?

No, and anyone claiming their tool does is overselling it. LeetCode-style practice builds pattern recognition for a specific, narrow interview format — timed algorithm problems, usually solved silently before you explain them. What gets practiced here is different: explaining your reasoning out loud, under a little pressure, for questions scoped to what your actual role and level should know. Both are real skill gaps. This closes one of them.

Is it actually free, or is that the bait for a paywall?

Three interviews a month, genuinely free, no card required to start. Paid tiers exist ($9 and $19) for more volume, because every graded answer costs a real model call and giving that away infinitely isn't a sustainable business, just an honest one that runs out of money. If you hit the free-tier wall, that's the actual cost of the thing showing up, not a manufactured limit designed to annoy you into paying.

Is the scoring calibrated to what a real interviewer would actually expect at my level?

That's the goal, and it's also the hardest thing to get right — a junior answer and a staff answer to the same question should be graded against genuinely different bars, not the same rubric with a curve applied. Where it falls short, the honest failure mode is scoring too leniently rather than too harshly, which is worth knowing before you treat a good score as more confident than it should be.
